VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Dear Prospective Tutor,

Thank you for your interest in participating as a volunteer with our reading and math program. This is Calvary's third year offering a structured reading and math one-on-one tutoring program to children in the local community. Half of the students in our program are performing below grade level in reading. In math, all the students that entered our program last year were performing below grade level. Our goal is to raise the reading and math scores of our students so that they perform at or above grade level. With your help, our organization seeks to provide the children in our program with the tools and motivation necessary to escape the cycle of drug abuse, crime, unemployment, and poverty that has afflicted so many in their parents' generation. The ability to read well, to excel in school, and the desire to learn are prerequisites to breaking this cycle, and we are glad that you want to join us in this effort.

Our highly structured reading and math programs are offered on Saturday morning for our elementary school students and on Wednesday evenings for our adolescent students. To ensure that tutors are prepared and that students are taught effectively, we provide excellent comprehensive training for all tutors. Our training and our curriculum have proven to be very effective. Thanks to the everyone's hard work, last year's students in the program increased their reading and math levels by an average of 1.5 grade levels, and their reading comprehension improved by an average of almost three grade levels

We appreciate your interest in Calvary's tutoring programs. Since last year, Calvary's program size has doubled and our need for tutors had grown substantially. We know that you will enjoy being a tutor. Watching a child learn to read and begin to perform mathematical functions that before seemed foreign to them is an amazing experience. Please look through the material and choose a program and training date so that you can take your first step in becoming a tutor. As soon as you know what date is best for training and what program best fits into your schedule, please call us so we can register you and pair you with student. If you have any question, please feel free to contact us at (202) 332-4200 Ext#158.

Thank you again. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Eda Garcia
